Born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1982, L.A.-based contemporary artist and filmmaker Tyler Shields is recognized as “Hollywood’s favourite photographer”.
Tyler Shields evolved from the” bad boy of photography” to a contemporary artist by producing images that play with our notions of gaze, power dynamics and hyper-realism. With iconoclastic tendencies and cinematographic style, Tyler Shields captures a new type of American life.
Mr. Shields’ work isn’t about celebrity – it’s about working with colleagues and friends in his social sphere who want to make art. He attempts to navigate through the complex and layered sphere of celebrity, into the more tangible world of portraiture, and give it meaning in the context of the shifting landscape of identities that make up 21st-century society. What does it take for an image to capture our attention through time, and the ever more scrutinized platform of contemporary art, now, a thousand tomorrows from today, or a thousand ‘likes’ from now?
